Unarmed Male Holding Keys Agitated No-Shoot E-Backer Target

An unarmed man who is furious, moving, and holding keys. It is the hardest no-shoot in the line: it separates anger from a deadly-force threat and makes the trainee identify a small metal object under pressure.

What the Trainee Has to Work Out

He is the most aggressive-looking figure in the entire set, armed or not. Metal glints in his hand. Everything except the object says shoot. The object is a set of keys.

Training Purpose

This is the hardest no-shoot in the line. It separates anger from deadly threat and forces the shooter to identify what is in the hand while under emotional pressure. It carries no scoring zones because there is nothing on it to hit.

Skills Reinforced

  • Separating aggression from a deadly-force threat
  • Identifying a small metallic object under stress
  • Trigger-finger and muzzle discipline
  • Giving verbal commands while assessing
  • Continuing to scan after a no-shoot

No Kill Zones: This Is a No-Shoot Target

This target has no kill zones. No head circle, no cardiac box, no rings. The person on it is not a threat, so there is nowhere on the paper that earns a point. One hole anywhere fails the run.

The rest of the line is scored by zone: a 4-inch head circle and 10-inch cardiac box on the armed figures, and a head circle on the gunman in the hostage targets. Among them, this target tests the decision that comes before any shot. The Range Manual covers how to build shoot / no-shoot decision drills and identifying armed and unarmed subjects.

Cut to Fit the E-Type Backer

An E-type backer is the plastic or cardboard silhouette, 19.5" wide and 40" tall, that pop-up lifters and static stands on military and police ranges are built around. This target is cut to that same outline at... ...

Cut to Fit the E-Type Backer

An E-type backer is the plastic or cardboard silhouette, 19.5" wide and 40" tall, that pop-up lifters and static stands on military and police ranges are built around. This target is cut to that same outline at 19" x 38", so the paper covers the face of the backer and the figure fills the shape from edge to edge. Hang it the way you hang any E-type facing.

The figure is printed life-size. Heads, shoulders and hands are the size they are on a real person at that distance, so sight pictures and hold-offs carry over.

Instructor Notes

Run it on a short exposure. Then discuss commands, distance and other force options. Change which no-shoots you hang between relays so shooters cannot memorize the lane.

Who This Target Is For

Firearms instructors who need believable no-shoot figures for E-type backers: law enforcement and military police cadre, academy staff, and private trainers running decision drills.
