What the Trainee Has to Work Out

His head is directly above hers, with his beard almost touching her hair. She is the most panicked hostage in the set and looks like she is about to move. The pistol is out to one side, level with his eyes.

Training Purpose

A stacked hostage picture with a frantic hostage. It trains the decision as much as the shot: is the window big enough, at this distance, for this shooter, with a hostage who may not stay still? In a mixed deck it is the precision problem.

Kill Zone: 4-Inch Head Circle on the Gunman Only

One kill zone is printed on this target, and it is on the gunman's face.

• Head circle. A 4-inch circle placed through the eyes, centered on the bridge of the nose, with the upper lip at its bottom edge. It contains 3-inch, 2-inch and 1-inch rings. Use the 1-inch ring as the X-ring for ties and for confirming zero.
• No cardiac box. The hostage is in front of the gunman's chest, so a chest shot is not available and no box is printed.
• Nothing on the hostage. Any round that touches the hostage is a failed run, whatever else it hits.
• Faint by design. The lines are thin and printed in a light tone. You can see them when you walk up to score. From the firing line they disappear, so the shooter aims at a person and not at a shape.

The head circle sits on the gunman's face directly above the hostage's head, so there is no room for a low miss. The rings give you a strict standard: hold shooters to the 3-inch or 2-inch ring once they can keep every round inside the circle. Cut to Fit the E-Type Backer

Most printed targets are rectangles that have to be folded or cut to fit a silhouette backer. This one is already cut to the E-type shape: 19" x 38", made to mount on the standard 19.5" x 40" E-type backer used on military and law enforcement ranges. The person on it is printed to fill that outline, so what the shooter sees downrange is a human figure and not a sheet of paper.

The figure is printed life-size. Heads, shoulders and hands are the size they are on a real person at that distance, so sight pictures and hold-offs carry over.

Instructor Notes

Let each shooter choose the distance they will take it from. Then score it. The choice is part of the test. Mix it with open threats so the shooter has to change gears from speed to precision.
