Hostage Scenario Flat Cap Gunman Handgun To Victim Head E-Backer Target

A hostage target with the gunman's face beside the hostage's head and the pistol on the hostage. It is one of the two tightest shots in the line, with time pressure built in.

What the Trainee Has to Work Out

His face is tucked behind and to the side of hers, and her hair crosses part of it. The pistol is on her, not on you, so time matters more than on any target where the gun faces the shooter.

Training Purpose

It trains the narrow shot: a face beside the hostage's head, with the weapon on the hostage. Along with the bound-hostage target, it is one of the two tightest shots in the set. Hung among open threats and no-shoots, it is the shot that has to be exact.

Skills Reinforced

  • Shooting a partly hidden face beside a hostage
  • Working a time limit with the weapon on the hostage
  • Precision inside a 4-inch circle
  • Knowing when the shot is not there
  • Seeing where the pistol is pointed before firing

Kill Zone: 4-Inch Head Circle on the Gunman Only

One kill zone is printed on this target, and it is on the gunman's face.

  • Head circle. A 4-inch circle on the face. Its center is at eye level on the bridge of the nose and its bottom edge sits on the upper lip. Concentric 3-inch, 2-inch and 1-inch rings are printed inside it, and the 1-inch ring serves as the X-ring.
  • No cardiac box. The hostage is in front of the gunman's chest, so a chest shot is not available and no box is printed.
  • Nothing on the hostage. Any round that touches the hostage is a failed run, whatever else it hits.
  • Faint by design. The lines are thin and printed... ...

  • Nothing on the hostage. Any round that touches the hostage is a failed run, whatever else it hits.
  • Faint by design. The lines are thin and printed in a light tone. You can see them when you walk up to score. From the firing line they disappear, so the shooter aims at a person and not at a shape.

The gunman's face is beside the hostage's head, so the edge of the head circle on her side runs close to her hair. Misses in that direction are hostage hits. The rings give you a strict standard: hold shooters to the 3-inch or 2-inch ring once they can keep every round inside the circle. See the Range Manual on choosing and running hostage targets and on how T-box, cardiac box and A/C scoring zones compare.

Cut to Fit the E-Type Backer

An E-type backer is the plastic or cardboard silhouette, 19.5" wide and 40" tall, that pop-up lifters and static stands on military and police ranges are built around. This target is cut to that same outline at 19" x 38", so the paper covers the face of the backer and the figure fills the shape from edge to edge. Hang it the way you hang any E-type facing.

The figure is printed life-size. Heads, shoulders and hands are the size they are on a real person at that distance, so sight pictures and hold-offs carry over.

Instructor Notes

Run it with a par time and no make-up shots. One round, scored on the rings. It works on static stands, turning stands and pop-up lifters that take an E-type backer.

Who This Target Is For

Tactical trainers, patrol instructors and range cadre who want a hostage target that fits the stands and lifters they already use.
