It gives patrol and military police trainees a wide torso to stay precise on, and a subject who does not match the usual picture of a gunman.

What the Trainee Has to Work Out

He looks like someone you would walk past at a hardware store, which is what makes the target useful. The body is wide, so shooters tend to accept any hit on the shirt. The scoring zones show how many of those hits were on the heart.

Training Purpose

This target fights the habit of treating a big torso as one big scoring area. It also puts an ordinary-looking, older subject into a deck that would otherwise be all young men. In a mixed deck it is one of the figures that must be engaged.

Skills Reinforced

Holding a precise aiming point on a wide torso

Recognizing a threat who does not look like one

Speed, with every round accounted for

Threat identification on a realistic human figure

Chest-to-head transitions

Kill Zones: 4-Inch Head Circle and 10-Inch Cardiac Box

Two kill zones are printed on this target. Both are placed on this figure's own anatomy, not at fixed spots on the paper, so they sit where the organs are.

Head circle. A 4-inch circle on the face. Its center is at eye level on the bridge of the nose and its bottom edge sits on the upper lip. Concentric 3-inch, 2-inch and 1-inch rings are printed inside it, and the 1-inch ring serves as the X-ring.

Cardiac box. A 10-inch square over the heart and the large vessels above it. The top edge runs across the base of the neck and the box extends down the upper chest. Concentric 8-inch, 6-inch and 4-inch squares are printed inside it, with the 4-inch square on the heart itself.

Faint by design. The lines are thin and printed in a light tone. You can see them when you walk up to score. From the firing line they disappear, so the shooter aims at a person and not at a shape.

Because the arms are fully extended, both hands and the pistol sit in the top of the cardiac box and the lower squares fall on open shirt. Because the zones are nested, one target supports a basic standard and a strict one. Count the outer lines for qualification and the inner lines when you are training precision. This target is cut to that same outline at 19" x 38", so the paper covers the face of the backer and the figure fills the shape from edge to edge. Hang it the way you hang any E-type facing.

The figure is printed life-size. Heads, shoulders and hands are the size they are on a real person at that distance, so sight pictures and hold-offs carry over.

Instructor Notes

Run it against the lean figures in the set at the same distance and compare group sizes. Groups usually open up on the bigger body. Typical distances are 3 to 25 yards with pistol and out to 50 with a carbine.

Who This Target Is For

Agencies and units that already shoot E-type silhouettes and want a person on them.
