Text on a subject pulls the eye, and this target measures how much time a trainee loses reading before reacting to the pistol.

What the Trainee Has to Work Out

The words on her shirt are large and readable from the line. Text pulls the eye and invites the shooter to read before acting. The pistol above it is already on target.

Training Purpose

It trains the shooter to process the threat before the distraction. Large text on a target is one of the most reliable ways to add a few tenths of a second to a decision. It contains 3-inch, 2-inch and 1-inch rings. Use the 1-inch ring as the X-ring for ties and for confirming zero.

Cardiac box. A 10-inch square that starts at the base of the neck and covers the upper chest, centered on the heart. It holds 8-inch, 6-inch and 4-inch squares, and the innermost 4-inch square is the heart box.

Faint by design. The lines are thin and printed in a light tone. You can see them when you walk up to score. From the firing line they disappear, so the shooter aims at a person and not at a shape.

The lettering sits across the lower half of the cardiac box. Hits on the words are in the box; hits below them are not. The nested squares and rings give you several standards on one target: the outer lines for a pass, the inner ones for instructors who want more. This one is already cut to the E-type shape: 19" x 38", made to mount on the standard 19.5" x 40" E-type backer used on military and law enforcement ranges. The person on it is printed to fill that outline, so what the shooter sees downrange is a human figure and not a sheet of paper.

The figure is printed life-size. Heads, shoulders and hands are the size they are on a real person at that distance, so sight pictures and hold-offs carry over.

Instructor Notes

Ask shooters afterward what the shirt said.
