It trains officers not to sort people into threat and non-threat by appearance, and it is a clean target for teaching the cardiac box.

What the Trainee Has to Work Out

She is dressed for a night out, not a fight. That mismatch is the read. Bare arms and shoulders give clear anatomical landmarks, and the sequins give a bright, uniform field with no aiming aids.

Training Purpose

It trains the shooter not to sort people into threat and non-threat by how they are dressed. It is also a clean anatomy target because so little is covered. It belongs in any shoot / no-shoot course of fire as a clear armed threat.

Skills Reinforced

Separating appearance from threat

Using shoulders and collarbones as landmarks

Looking at the hands before the face

Shot placement in the cardiac box and head circle

Shoot / no-shoot decisions in a mixed course of fire

Kill Zones: 4-Inch Head Circle and 10-Inch Cardiac Box

Two kill zones are printed on this target. Both are placed on this figure's own anatomy, not at fixed spots on the paper, so they sit where the organs are.

Head circle. A 4-inch circle placed through the eyes, centered on the bridge of the nose, with the upper lip at its bottom edge. It contains 3-inch, 2-inch and 1-inch rings. Use the 1-inch ring as the X-ring for ties and for confirming zero.

Cardiac box. A 10-inch square on the upper chest, centered on the heart, with its top edge at the base of the neck just above the notch of the breastbone. Inside it are 8-inch, 6-inch and 4-inch squares. The 4-inch core lies directly over the heart.

Hard to see on purpose. Every line is a light hairline. It is readable at arm's length for scoring and invisible from shooting distance, which keeps the shooter aiming at anatomy.

Bare shoulders make the box easy to check: the top edge runs just below the collarbones and the heart box sits behind the pistol and hands. Because the zones are nested, one target supports a basic standard and a strict one. Count the outer lines for qualification and the inner lines when you are training precision. This target is cut to that same outline at 19" x 38", so the paper covers the face of the backer and the figure fills the shape from edge to edge. Hang it the way you hang any E-type facing.

The figure is printed life-size. Heads, shoulders and hands are the size they are on a real person at that distance, so sight pictures and hold-offs carry over.

Instructor Notes

Put it in a deck of rougher-looking figures and watch for the shooter who hesitates on this one only.
